| There are three ‘Questions and Answers about Vasa’ below to help you learn about the Vasa Order of America (VOA) in general. | Below the Questions and Answers, you can link to the web sites for the District Lodge and the Grand Lodge. |
1. What is the Vasa Order of America?
In 1896, the Vasa Order of America was organized in New Haven, Connecticut by Swedish immigrants who belonged to several local independent Swedish societies who had come to the conclusion that cooperation would strengthen each local unit and broad-en its appeal. The name Vasa Order of America was selected to honor the great Swedish King and Patriot Gustav Vasa who is recognized as the Father of his Country as George Washington is in America.
2. What was the original purpose of Vasa?
Originally, Vasa was a mutual benefit self help society which enabled the immigrant community to cope with illness and unforeseen financial distress before the day of health insurance and government welfare benefits. It also provided vital recreational, cultural and social activities for its members.
3. What is Vasa’s role today?
With the passage of time, the trials and tribulations of immigrant life passed for the Swedes. Today, Vasa's role in the United States is to preserve among Americans of Swedish descent, a consciousness of their "roots", to retain as much as possible some of the customs and traditions of our immigrant parents and grandparents, and to be a bridge for maintaining cultural and personal ties with the homeland of our ancestors.
4. Who may join?
Vasa Membership is open to all. We invite you to be a part of this wonderful organization and participate in our Swedish cultural activites and fellowship!
