A Brief History of Drott Lodge No. 168 (VOA), Washington, DC

Founded in 1896 in New England, the Vasa Order of America united four Swedish societies. By 1906, it had expanded to six district lodges with around 10,000 members.

Swedish settlers began arriving in the Washington DC area in the late 1800s, and by 1910, there were approximately 300 Swedes. A Scandinavian society formed but dissolved by 1909.

In January 1910, the Drott society was established and applied for membership in the Vasa Order. The local lodge was chartered on February 18, 1910, with 31 charter members. The inaugural meeting featured speeches, music, and dance.

In 1911, Drott hosted the District convention, featuring a banquet at the Hotel Fritz Reuter for $1. While this was a modest price, it represented a full day's wage for many.

By 1920, Drott had 92 members and took an active role in Swedish affairs, advocating for a monument to John Ericsson and fostering relations with the Swedish Legation.

In 1942, the lodge transitioned to English while still allowing Swedish during meetings. Carl W. Johnson served as Grand Master from 1944 to 1954, overseeing significant anniversaries.

Since 1960, Drott has seen substantial growth, at one point boasting over 270 members. This resurgence aligns with an ethnic revival in the U.S., allowing descendants of immigrants to connect with their heritage. Today, Drott Lodge maintains a multi-generational roll of 90-plus members from the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.

Drott Lodge supports cultural initiatives, including the Vasa Archives and the American Swedish Historical Museum.

The lodge adapts to the evolving landscape of "Swedish-America," actively engaging younger generations to ensure its future.

Additionally, Drott is aware of its common Scandinavian heritage and collaborates with other Scandinavian societies promoting unity among our communities.

Today we celebrate all Nordic cultures and you do not have to have Scandinavian DNA to join us. We welcome all those interested in the culture.
